How safe To get an idea, I challenged it to protect my test system against a collection of various types of malware. Note that Windows Defender doesnt promise to detect lower risk items such as adware and potentially unwanted programs, or PUPs. Most other antivirus programs at least give you the option to detect and remove both of these. Some antivirus products take a files origin into account when evaluating whether it might be malicious.
